Terpenes (aka 'Terps') are the organic compounds produced in plants that give them their specific flavor and smell profile. They are found in the essential oil of plants we utilize. They are primarily used to add a pleasant taste and smell to bland manufactured products and increases their value.

Terp Science Labs was created by a team of the leading extraction and aromatic molecule experts; operating out of Los Angeles, California. Our team utilizes a solvent less extraction process to avoid dilution of the plant’s extract. Our terpene isolates are extracted utilizing plants such as citrus fruits and botanicals through a steam distillation method. Terpenes are then blended to create unique profile blends to mimic the desired strain specific profile. Our terpene strain profiles are undiluted and do not contain any cannabinoids whatsoever.

Our terpene blends are created with the purest terpene isolates to deliver the ultimate aromatic experience.  Our profiles are always free of PG, VG, PEG, MCT and Vitamin E Acetete.  All of our products are made in the USA to ensure premium and consistent quality standards.

We cater to our clients whether you are a retailer, product developer, extractor or a customer.  We want to help you get the best use of our products.  We are always available for questions and feedback.  Interested in private label?  Use the Livechat function below. We also do custom formulations, so please feel free to reach out to us about custom formulations via the contact us page

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly are terpenes?

Terpenes are a diverse group of organic compounds that are naturally produced by a wide range of plants, including fruits, flowers, herbs, and trees. They are responsible for the distinct scents and flavors that you encounter in various botanicals. Terpenes play a crucial role in nature, acting as a form of communication between plants and the environment. They can attract pollinators, repel predators, and protect plants from diseases.

Terpenes are incredibly diverse, with thousands of different types identified so far. Each terpene has its own unique aroma and potential effects. For example:

Limonene : Found in citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, limonene has a zesty, uplifting scent and is believed to have mood-boosting and stress-relieving properties.

Linalool : Present in lavender and other floral plants, linalool has a calming and soothing aroma, often associated with relaxation and sleep support.

Myrcene : Common in hops, mangoes, myrcene is known for its earthy, herbal scent and potential anti-inflammatory and sedative effects.

Pinene : As the name suggests, pinene is found in pine trees and other coniferous plants. It has a refreshing, piney aroma and is associated with improved focus and respiratory benefits.

Beta-Caryophyllene : Present in black pepper, cloves, this terpene has a spicy, peppery aroma and may have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

Terpinolene : Found in herbs like rosemary and sage, terpinolene has a complex, herbal aroma and is often considered to have a relaxing and calming influence.

The world of terpenes is still being explored, and ongoing research is uncovering more about their potential benefits and interactions. Whether you're interested in their sensory delights, potential health benefits, or both, terpenes offer a fascinating and aromatic journey into the natural world of plants.

What is a required prop 65 warning?

A Proposition 65 warning, also known as a Prop 65 warning, is a label that is required by California law to be placed on products that contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted to inform and protect consumers from potential exposure to these harmful chemicals.

If a product contains any of the chemicals listed by California as potentially harmful, the manufacturer, distributor, or retailer is legally obligated to provide a clear and reasonable warning to consumers. The warning aims to inform individuals about the potential risks associated with using or consuming the product.

The specific warning language can vary depending on the type of exposure and the chemicals involved. Generally, the warning includes the following elements:

A Statement : The warning must indicate that the product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

A List of Chemicals : The warning may or may not include the names of the specific chemicals present in the product.

Pictogram : The warning may include a black and yellow triangular pictogram with an exclamation mark to visually convey the potential hazard.

Contact Information : The warning might provide a way for consumers to obtain additional information about the chemicals and their potential risks.

Proposition 65 warnings can be found on a wide range of products, including food and beverages, household items, cosmetics, and more. They can appear on product labels, packaging, in-store signage, and even online platforms for products sold in California.

It's important to note that a Prop 65 warning does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe or prohibited from being sold. The goal is to ensure that consumers are informed about potential risks and can make educated choices about the products they purchase and use.

How Can I Use Terpenes?

Using terpenes can be an exciting and aromatic journey, whether you're interested in enhancing flavors, enjoying scents, or exploring their potential therapeutic benefits. Here are some ways you can use terpenes:

Aromatherapy : One of the most popular uses of terpenes is in aromatherapy. Essential oils, which are rich in terpenes, can be diffused in the air using a diffuser to create a calming, uplifting, or invigorating atmosphere in your living space. For example, lavender essential oil (rich in linalool) is often used for relaxation, while citrus oils (containing limonene) can provide an energizing boost.

Cooking : Terpenes can greatly enhance the flavors of your culinary creations. Many herbs, spices, and citrus fruits contain terpenes that contribute to their distinctive tastes. Incorporate fresh herbs like basil (rich in linalool) or add citrus zest (containing limonene) to your dishes to elevate the sensory experience of your meals.

Topical Application : Some terpenes have potential therapeutic benefits when applied to the skin. For example, lavender oil (linalool) is commonly used for its soothing properties. However, it's important to properly dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin and conduct a patch test to avoid adverse reactions.

Personal Care Products : Terpenes are used in various personal care products, such as perfumes, lotions, and bath products. These products can offer both aromatic pleasure and potential wellness benefits.

DIY Blends : You can experiment with creating your own blends of terpenes for specific purposes. For example, you might mix terpenes known for their calming effects, like linalool and myrcene, to create a custom relaxation blend.

Educational Exploration : Engage in educational experiences about terpenes. Attend workshops, seminars, or online courses that delve into the world of terpenes, their properties, and how they're used in different fields.

When using terpenes, it's essential to exercise caution and proper handling, especially when working with concentrated essential oils. Some people might have sensitivities or allergies to certain terpenes, so it's a good idea to do a patch test before widespread use.

Whether you're seeking aromatic enjoyment, exploring new flavors, or considering potential wellness benefits, incorporating terpenes into your daily life can offer a delightful and enriching experience.

Do Terpenes Have Any Benefits?

Yes, terpenes have been associated with a variety of potential benefits, particularly when it comes to their aromatic and therapeutic properties. Here are some ways in which terpenes may offer benefits:

Terpenes play a big part in separating indica, sativa and hybrid effects on the user. So by reintroducing TSL terpene strain blends to your creations you are also bringing back some of the natural properties of the plants they replicate.

Aromatherapy and Mood Enhancement : Terpenes are known for their aromatic qualities, and different terpenes are believed to have unique effects on mood and emotions. For example, some terpenes like limonene (citrusy) and pinene (piney) are thought to have uplifting and invigorating effects, while others like linalool (floral) are associated with relaxation and stress reduction.

Potential Therapeutic Effects : While more research is needed, some terpenes have been studied for their potential therapeutic properties. For instance, myrcene is thought to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. Beta-caryophyllene has shown promise as an anti-inflammatory and might interact with the endocannabinoid system.

Enhancement of the "Entourage Effect": In the context of cannabis, terpenes are believed to work synergistically with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to produce a combined effect known as the "entourage effect." This phenomenon suggests that the presence of specific terpenes can enhance the overall therapeutic benefits of cannabis.

Flavor Enhancement : Terpenes play a significant role in the flavors of various plants, fruits, and herbs. Incorporating terpenes into cooking or beverages can elevate the taste and sensory experience of your meals.

Relaxation and Sleep Support : Terpenes like linalool and myrcene are often associated with relaxation and potential sleep-supportive effects. Lavender, rich in linalool, is a common example of a plant used for relaxation and sleep improvement.

Focus and Mental Clarity : Terpenes like pinene and limonene are believed to have properties that can enhance focus and mental clarity. These terpenes are often found in plants with invigorating scents, such as pine and citrus.

Skin and Body Care : Some terpenes, when used in properly diluted forms, can be incorporated into skincare and body care products. For example, terpenes like limonene might be added to products for their pleasant scents and potential skin-soothing effects.

It's important to note that while terpenes offer exciting potential benefits, individual responses can vary. Additionally, research is ongoing, and more scientific studies are needed to fully understand the extent of terpenes' effects and their mechanisms of action. If you're considering using terpenes for specific benefits, it's a good idea to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or aromatherapist to ensure safe and appropriate use.
